M
adrid , in the middle of the Iberian peninsula , the city is becoming a  cosmopolitan center. Ranging from it's excellent public efficient transport to the superb food served in most of the restaurants.  A descent coffee is guaranteed almost in any bar. Bars do serve food, mainly as the menu of the day. Menus start at 900pts and may reach up to 1800pts, that's when they call it a special menu. The menu includes starter , main course and desserts. Of course drink and bread are included. Coffee with milk costs between 125 and 300 pts, depending where are you having it. In a normal bar (typical bars that you find in every corner) it costs 125 pts, in coffee shops 175 pts, and if you're taking it in a terrace then you might be charged as high as 300 pts.

Visiting the city will take 3 days, but it's surroundings are no less exciting than Madrid itself. A day to Toledo and Aranjuez , another for Salamanca and Avila and of course the classical romantic Segovia can not be missed. Not far from Madrid are Chinchon, Cuenca and Burgos.

In Total one needs at least 7 days for Madrid and surroundings. Believe me, you will not be bored, you will find something interesting wherever you go. And do not forget the night life, it's superb. Madrid is regarded as the place for going out.

A must in Madrid is the museums tour. The Museo del Prado is one of the best picturesque museums in the world, treating paintings between the 14th century and the end of the 19th. It contains a lot of Ruben's works, La Via Lactia, Saturno and Las Tres Gracias. The museum has got tens of Velazquez and perhaps more than a hundred of Goya.  The visit costs 600 pts.,you have discounts for less than 25 yrs. old, and pensioners. On Saturday after 14:00 and Sunday morning the visit is free. Sunday after 14:00 and whole Monday  it's closed. And not to forget the Royal Palace is a must , the visit costs 500 pts, and similar discounts are applied (Wednesday free entrance).

For modern art seekers, El Museo de la Reina Sofia , is a modern art museum, some of Picasso's works are there. And in the same block you will find the Thyssen museum , it's a private collection, excellent.

And when you're tired of all , and it's sunny as usual , you can go to the Retiro park, sit down and relax, or just enjoy the different kinds of music played from groups from all over the world.  Some shows are for children, but they are mainly in Spanish.
